With the onset of the summer season, the topic of sunscreen products becomes relevant again.
There is also the question that all parents face - how often to apply sunscreen product on ourchild’s body, as well as what sunscreen product to choose. There are various issues regarding the use of sunscreen.
In this article we will talk about children's sunscreen and how often children should apply sunscreen lotion.
Needless to say,how important is theproper care for children's skin, which includes the use of quality sunscreen products with a high factor.
Why usage of sunscreen products is so important for children?
Delicate children's skin is many times more vulnerable to sunlight than adults. An important fact that we shouldmention is that between 50% and 80% of skin damage caused by ultraviolet rays occur during childhood and adolescence.
Sunburn on the skin in childhood doubles the risk of skin cancer in adulthood.
Protecting children's skin from the sun's rays is important not only during the summer vacation on the beach, but also during all outdoor activities that the child performs. In cloudy weather, high levels of ultraviolet rays can also be observed.
For children, the use of a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF 50+ factor is recommended. Also, sunscreen products should be applied to all exposed areas of the body to provide reliable protection from sunburn for the child.
What are sunscreen products?
Ultraviolet radiation is divided into two types - UVA and UVB. UVA radiation has a wavelength of 315-400 nm. and penetrates the dermis. This type of radiation causes skin aging.
UVB rays, penetrate only the epidermis and cause sunburn and redness of the skin. They have a wavelength of 280-315nm.
The requirement for sunscreens on the market is to have a broad-spectrum filter. That is, to provide protection from both types of rays - UVA and UVB.
For European countries, the rule for UVA protection of sunscreen products is to be at least one third of UVB protection. The packaging of sunscreen products usually has a small round UVA inscription in the middle.
It is important to mention that sunscreen products do not block sunlight completely, but mainly most of it.
For example, a medium sun protection factor SPF 15 provides 94% protection from UVB rays, a high factor such as SPF 30 offers up to 97% protection, and the highest SPF 50-98% protection.
Sunscreen products contain two different types of light protection filters. One of them is ethylhexyl methoxycinnamate. This type of chemical filter absorbs ultraviolet radiation and converts it into heat energy.
As a rule, chemical filters are not contained in natural cosmetics, as they are believed to cause skin allergies.
Another type of filters are mineral filters, which reflect light on the top layer of the skin. When used, they can leave a whitish layer on the skin depending on the size of the nanoparticles in them.
Sunscreen products of some brands are tinted so that they do not make the skin too white.
After 2013, there was a requirement for sunscreen products that contain nanoparticles smaller than 100 nanometers,to have the particles on the packaging declared.
Vegetable oils, which are usually found in natural cosmetics, have a natural sunscreen that is usually low. It is due to the antioxidant composition in natural vegetable oils.

Reapply sunscreen to children's skin after each immersion in water, wiping with a towel or sweating. Repeated application of a sunscreen does not increase the sun protection factor, but it is still important to do so.
The reason for this is that the level of protection of a product (regardless of the type of factor) decreases as a result of contact with water, sweating or wiping with a towel.
In order to get the most out of the properties of a sunscreen product and achieve its full sun protection factor, it is advisable to use a larger amount of it on the skin.
On average for 1 sq. Cm. skin need 2 mg. sunscreen product. This means that in order to ensure complete protection, we must use 30 ml. for the whole body. For the face, the recommended amount of sunscreen is about a third of a teaspoon to achieve maximum protection.
The use of a smaller amount accordingly means reduced sun protection. In fact, most people do not use that amount, but when it comes to baby skin, it is not recommended to save on the amount.
How effective a sunscreen will be depends on various factors such as skin type, period of sun exposure, location, time of day.
Sunscreen products with an SPF of 15 or 20 are recommended for daily use. If you live in the south, it is recommended to use at least SPF 30 for fair skin. For people who suffer from sun allergies, an even higher sun protection factor is recommended.
Some cosmetics contain vitamin A and fruit acids, which make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. In such cases, the best solution is to regularly apply a sufficient amount of high quality sunscreen.
